When configuring directory synchronisation there are three mail authentication types. Namely password hash synchronisation, ADFS authentication and Pass through authentication.

All three authentication types support any size of an organisation and SSO. Highly security concerned organisations would not want to use password hash synchronisation.

Pass through authentication and ADFS authentication are the solutions for such organisations but pass-through authentication doesn’t support smart card authentication.
